Mats van Biljouw is 23 years old, but the pace of his life already resembles that of an artist many years into an international career.
Three years ago, he was producing music in his bedroom in Horst, Limburg, playing his first tracks to friends. Today, he is known to thousands as KLOFAMA: a hardtechno DJ and producer performing on major stages across Europe, travelling constantly and building a name at remarkable speed.
In the short documentary I AM: KLOFAMA, production company CULT. follows Van Biljouw during the year in which that momentum reaches a new level. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film looks beyond the packed venues and high-energy performances to ask a more personal question: who is Mats when he is not KLOFAMA?
The documentary follows him through the realities of a fast-moving career: airports, hotel rooms, backstage spaces, long journeys and performances in front of thousands of people. But it also returns to Horst, where Mats grew up and where he still comes home. It is there that the contrast between the artist and the person becomes most visible.
On one side is KLOFAMA, an increasingly recognisable name in a hardtechno scene defined by intensity, speed and scale. On the other is Mats van Biljouw, the young man from Limburg whose upbringing was shaped by a culture of staying grounded.
That duality is at the centre of I AM: KLOFAMA. The film is not just about an artist breaking through. It is about what happens when someone’s public identity grows faster than their private life can process.

A career in fast-forward
KLOFAMA’s rise reflects the changing reality of today’s music industry. Not long ago, building an international DJ career often meant years of working through local clubs, regional scenes and gradual industry recognition. Now, a distinctive sound, online visibility and a direct connection with audiences can propel an artist to international stages in a matter of years.
Mats is part of that new generation.
What began in a bedroom in Horst has quickly developed into a career that has brought him to some of Europe’s most significant hardtechno and electronic music platforms. He has performed at Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech, as well as at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
In the past two years, he has also sold out several all-night-long performances in the Netherlands and abroad. The achievement underlines how quickly KLOFAMA has moved from emerging artist to a name capable of independently attracting large audiences.
For fans, this rise may look like a straightforward success story. But the documentary explores what lies behind it: the pressure to keep performing, the demands of constant travel, the expectations that come with growing visibility and the challenge of remaining connected to ordinary life.

The person behind the performance
While KLOFAMA is built for the stage, I AM: KLOFAMA creates room for the quieter moments that are rarely visible to the public.
The film shows Mats at home, sitting at the kitchen table, spending time with friends who knew him before the artist name took on a life of its own, and driving through the town where everything began. In those moments, there are no large crowds, no stage lights and no pressure to perform.
Instead, the documentary gives space to uncertainty, exhaustion, loneliness and relief—the feelings that can come with a life that changes almost overnight.
The central question is simple, but not easy to answer: how do you stay yourself when thousands of people know you as someone else? When KLOFAMA becomes bigger than Mats, how does Mats hold on to the people, routines and values that existed before the breakthrough?
The documentary does not present fame as purely glamorous or purely difficult. It captures the contradiction of a young artist living out a dream while trying to understand the consequences of achieving it so quickly.

More than hardtechno
Although rooted in hardtechno culture, I AM: KLOFAMA speaks to a wider experience. It is about ambition, public visibility and the growing pressure faced by young people whose careers unfold in front of an audience.
KLOFAMA’s story is one of music, momentum and major stages. But at its core, it is also a story about identity: the distance between the person people see and the person who remains once the music stops.
I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
