UK electronic artist Scarper returns with eight previously unreleased tracks that blur the lines between house, techno, acid and emotive electronica.
For some producers, the archive is where ideas go to disappear. For Scarper, it is where a new chapter begins.
With Off-Cuts (2014–2021), the UK-based artist revisits a cache of unreleased music made during one of the most creatively active periods of his career. The eight-track collection brings together recordings that existed alongside the making of his acclaimed debut album Warmer Squares and the era of his standout 2020 track, “E-Funk.”
The title may suggest fragments, but the music tells another story. These are not rough ideas hurriedly released for the sake of nostalgia. Each production has been carefully revisited and finished, giving the project a cohesive and purposeful feel. Across the record, Scarper’s musical personality remains unmistakable: warm, exploratory, rhythmically assured and emotionally alert.
“Skynet” opens the release with an immediate rush of scale. Built around epic chord progressions and an uplifting sense of momentum, it delivers the kind of melodic tension that can light up a dancefloor or soundtrack a solitary late-night listen. “Steppe” flips the script with playful acid movement, wiry synth textures and a groove that feels loose, lively and deeply rooted in underground club culture. “Halocline” brings another dimension, using gorgeous string arrangements to create a moment of restraint and beauty within the record’s wider machine-driven energy.
The strength of Off-Cuts (2014–2021) lies in that contrast. Scarper is comfortable with toughness, but never afraid of tenderness. He understands the power of repetition, but knows when to let harmony and texture take centre stage. The result is a collection that speaks to dancers, selectors and close listeners alike.
The release emerged after Scarper took a fresh look at the ideas stored across old laptop sessions:
“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world. It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”
That decision adds real value to Scarper’s catalogue. Off-Cuts (2014–2021) offers new perspective on the breadth of his production work during a period already marked by significant recognition. Warmer Squares received universal critical acclaim, while Scarper’s music gained support from iconic artists including Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig.
His sound has also reached audiences through radio support from Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music, alongside coverage in respected publications such as Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R. With “E-Funk” currently experiencing a resurgence after a new imprint brought it back to physical format, attention is once again turning toward Scarper’s unique ability to balance timeless club energy with a more expansive musical imagination.
Releasing almost exclusively through his own Plexus Records, Scarper continues to embody the value of artistic independence. There is no attempt to follow a single scene or fit a narrow genre category. Instead, he draws from across the electronic spectrum and reshapes those influences into something distinctly his own.
Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is a celebration of that freedom — a record made from the past, but charged with the excitement of what is still to come.
